Oak Report Aug 20-24

Headed up to Oak Orchard for our annual salmon trip.    Started out under a
black cloud of sorts, as we learned the day before that my new Yamaha was
not going to make it.   More on that in a seperate blog tomorrow.

AUG 20
Had a shortage of boat space today, so I opted to hang out with a couple
of our Oak friends at the Black North Inn.   Nice talking to you "Lucky" Jack and
Reel Bob!  My brother went out with a couple of the guys, and they went 0-2.

AUG 21
Plenty of T-storms popping up on the radar this morning.  My brother, Gary, Randy
and Gerb decided to give it a try anyway.   They got in a couple of hours before
being chased off for the rest of the day.

AUG 22
Waves are rolling over the breakwall.   So we visited Captains Cove, Brown's
Berry Patch, did some minor tackle maintenance, looked at a couple of
boats and hung out all day.

AUG 23
FINALLY made it out today.   Doug and Randy had to leave yesterday, and Gary
and Gerb are on another boat, so it was just my brother and me today.   It was
great that Mark had a boat we could use, but he doesn't have it full rigged, so we kind
of flew a bit blind.   Nonetheless, we went 5 for 5 (2 small kings, 3 steelhead) a couple
of miles offshore.    Spin doc/siggs rigs on the divers, double crush and 42 second spoon
off the rigs.   Fish are deep.   95-110 on the riggers.

Had made arrangements to get my son up for a day, so at lunchtime I rolled to Buffalo to
meet my wife and get Jack.

Went out for the evening bite with Mark, Jack and Gary.   Broke off a solid rip on a spin doc
and fly combo; then Jack got his first ever Lake Ontario salmon, a small skipper on a NBK
Ultra glow Fishlander.   Followed that up with about a 10lb Brown on the same spoon.

(Forgot the camera, so we had to use cellphones for these.)

Sad story this morning.   Heard a very loud boom from up the river, then sirens and starflight
coming over.    Turns out that a 92 year old man got burned pretty badly when a propane
tank at the back of his house blew up.    We are all hoping he will be ok.

AUG 24
Finished off the trip this morning with Jack and Mark.   Got a nice 8lb Atlantic off the same
NBK Fishlander, then Jack hooked up and landed his biggest salmon, a mid-teen on a
Black/green Mag NK.

All in all, another great trip!  Lots of fun, food and laughs!   Special thanks to Steve, Tracy,
Beanie and Jenny at the North; and 4 C's Marina!   We'll be back!

      Thanks Corey.

He's right on the edge of becoming a regular on some of these trips, but it
worked out that we could get him up there for the overnight, and on top
of that he got his first king, brown and atlantic!
